Therapy for Highly Sensitive People in Durham, NC
When precision is the job and the same care you give the work never comes back to you.
HIPAA-compliant telehealth video sessions, never in person
Sensitivity Inside Careful Work
Durham is full of people paid to notice small things. A shift in a data set, a symptom that does not fit, an argument with a soft spot in it. High sensitivity is an asset in that world, and it is one reason a lot of sensitive adults end up here.
The trait does not switch off at the edge of the task, though. The same depth that catches the anomaly also holds on to the tone of a review, the look on a patient's family member's face, the offhand remark from someone senior. It all stays loaded.
Feeling Things at Work You Are Not Supposed to Feel
Clinical and research culture rewards a certain flatness. You are expected to be affected professionally and unaffected personally, which is not actually how a nervous system works. So people learn to hide the response instead of processing it, and the unprocessed part accumulates.
Over years that can look like dread before rounds, or a project that quietly becomes unbearable, or a person who is warm at home and armored from the moment they badge in. Naming what is actually being carried is usually the first useful step.
Perfectionism That Is Really Vigilance
Sensitive adults in evaluative environments often develop a very fine radar for disapproval, then organize their entire working life around never triggering it. That gets called perfectionism. It is closer to vigilance, and it is expensive.
We work on separating standards you actually hold from standards you adopted to stay safe, which are rarely the same list.

I am Ryane Miller, MSW, LCSW. My North Carolina clinical social work license is held under my legal name, Ryan Miller, #C012653. Every appointment is a HIPAA-compliant telehealth video session. There is no office in Durham and no in person option anywhere. I work with adults who are physically in North Carolina during their sessions. I do not promise a particular outcome or a set number of sessions.
